Happy New School Year!
THE LEAD ARTICLE THIS MONTH is written by one of our teachers who has thought through a philosophy of mathematics teaching which differs from that of many others. At this time, your editor believes that he must not offer any comments on the content, either as a fellow-teacher or as the official representative of MCATA. However, he will publish letters from the readers concerning the ideas presented and will give the author the space needed to reply to such letters. He will also, if necessary, make the official ATA position available.
WELCOME BACK TO THE CLASSROOM. Perhaps MCATA and Delta-K can help you in a new way this year. Have you visited our teacher center (U. of A. Education Building, 9th floor)? When you get to the U. of A., contact Dr. W. George Cathcart or Dr. K. Allen Neufeld to arrange a visit. Another way in which we can help you is by inviting you to attend our annual conference, to be held October 3 and 4. See the back page for registration. What about literature? See our list of NCTM material (in this edition) available through MCATA. Order through us, thus helping to keep your dues lower; MCATA receives 20 percent of the cost for publications. Speaking of NCTM, how about becoming a member? NCTM provides publications for us, it has made possible the opening of our teacher center, and helps us regularly in preparing our annual meetings, including name-of-site meetings.
