The decimal number system provides mathematical models for a large number of the practical problems that students are likely to encounter. Yet research studies show that students perform poorly on tasks [hat require decimal computation, and that most often the students apply a memorized computational rule in a meaningless way (Bell, Swan and Taylor 1981; Hiebert and Wearne 1984).
