Alberta Mathematics Educator Awards
At a recent Mathematics Council of The Alberta Teachers’ Association (MCATA) executive meeting, the executive approved a proposal to change the criteria for awarding the Alberta Mathematics Educator A ward. In the past, one individual who demonstrated outstanding leadership in mathematics education in Alberta was honored each year. Beginning in 1997, the Alberta Mathematics Educator Award will be awarded to a maximum of three people.
An award may be given to an individual in each of the following categories:
- K-6 classroom teachers
- Grades 7-12 classroom teachers
- Those who have made exceptional contributions to professional development of teachers at the school, local, provincial or national levels.
In addition to the criteria listed above, the individuals must have also demonstrated leadership in encouraging the teaching, learning and understanding of mathematics in the province of Alberta.
No more than one award will be conferred in each category and the conferring of awards will be contingent upon there being deserving recipients in each category. The awards will be presented at the MCA TA annual conference.
There are also changes to the nominating procedures. Nominators must be members ofMCATA, however, it is not necessary that the nominees be members.
So, please nominate colleagues and individuals who have demonstrated leadership in encouraging the continuing enhancement of teaching, learning and understanding mathematics in our province. The nomination forms are included with this newsletter.
Nomination Procedure
Nominations for the award must be forwarded to the selection committee. Nominators must be members of MCATA. A complete nomination application includes the following three things:
- Information about nominee (Part 1)
- Information about nominator (Part 2)
- Three letters of support that reflect the criteria listed above
