What Is a Good Mathematics Teacher? How Do We Find One?

The following article is a summary of presentations and discussions I conducted in North America and Europe when I was president of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). It seems to be appropriate for me to recall some of these ideas for our many young teachers of mathematics.
