From The Editor’s Laptop
In everyday work in the classroom, when a math lesson focuses on the question “What mathematics is important?” or “What is the big idea behind the mathematics?” one can feel the teacher’s passion, which is passed on to students. The teacher’s reflections on that lesson most likely sound like this: “That’s the most successful discussion I’ve ever had in class. They actually get it. I love it! Tomorrow, I think I will . . . .” Before the teacher knows it, he or she has finished planning another lesson.
This is a pattern I have found in my own work. For me, this is definitely the teacher buy-in in math. Only when teachers believe in what they do will students work with them.
So, math teachers, why do you do what you want to do?
Happy mathing!
