Join MCATA for an engaging for a One Day Creative Mathematics Symposium designed to support and enhance your current math teaching strategies. The session “Curiouser and Curiouser!”: Exploring Geometric Thinking invites K-12 teachers to celebrate the magic of geometry on the most mathematically iconic day of the year—Pi Day! What better way to honor 3.14 than by diving into the endless possibilities of shapes, patterns, and spatial reasoning? Participants will engage in hands-on activities like visualizing, folding, cutting, and using tools to model transformations, tessellations, and 3D shapes. These engaging explorations not only deepen understanding of geometry but also connect it across the K-12 curriculum, offering exciting strategies to inspire students to think critically and creatively about the spaces around them. Join us to make this Pi Day an unforgettable celebration of mathematical wonder!
Session Description
Curiouser and Curiouser!”: Exploring Geometric Thinking (Dr. Lynn McGarvey & Dr. Josh Markle)
“‘Curiouser and curiouser!’ cried Alice…; ‘now I’m opening out like the largest telescope that ever was! Good-bye, feet!’” (Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland, 1865).
Just as Alice’s adventures stretch her imagination and perspective, geometric thinking allows students to explore, stretch, and reimagine the shapes and spaces around them. In this session, we invite K-12 teachers to dive into the dynamic processes of geometry—decomposing and composing, reflecting and rotating, slicing and folding, stretching and distorting—and discover how these concepts open new pathways for creativity and understanding in mathematics.
Through engaging, hands-on activities, participants will have opportunities to:
- Visualize and manipulate shapes
- Fold, cut, and explore symmetry and reflections
- Use tools to model geometric transformations and tessellations.
- Investigate 3D shapes by building models and exploring cross-sections.
- Experiment with distortion and scaling through digital tools.
These actions not only enhance student understanding of geometry but also connect across the K-12 mathematics curriculum. This session will help you see geometry from a new perspective and find innovative ways to support your students in becoming curious, creative, and courageous mathematicians.
