If you have not already done so, I encourage you to read Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics, published by NCTM.
The following article, taken from the January 1992 issue of The National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics Newsletter, challenges all mathematics teachers. What it says is as true for students in Alberta as it is for students in the United States. Mathematics is much more than learning basic facts. A comprehensive knowledge of mathematics can have a positive effect on nearly every aspect of our lives.
